While in Ecuador in the end of 2013 and the beginning of 2014 I travelled with the Pachamama Alliance to visit the communities of the Achuar and Sapara tribes in the Amazon rainforest. I made lots of watercolours along the way all of them in a little sketch book. On returning to Ireland I created a number of larger pieces. Below are two 100cm x 1oocm pieces in Acrylic and Charcoal on stretched canvas. It is the first and only time I worked in Acrylic, as I prefer when I can to use environmentally benign materials. The use of acrylic here is a reference to petroleum of which the binder for the paint is made, and the petroleum industries which these communities are fighting against in order to prevent oil exploration, and the destruction of their homes.
